“Yaha se bahut door...

Galat aur sahi k paar...

Ek maidan hai...

Me waha milunga tujhe”

The entire film is summed up in this one quote by Rumi. It’s just a couple of lines spoken by Ranbir in his deep voice. You like what was said but you still didn’t understand the meaning of it. Even if you understand the meaning of it, you may not realize it. The one who understood and realized the meaning of that quote, will understand the film.

I was 23 when I saw this film. The prime reason was A R Rahman’s music, Imtiyaz Ali's track record of films and the kick ass trailer of the film. I expected that it would be a rags to riches story but I was disappointed that it turned out to be something else. Something which I liked but I was not delighted about. I blamed editing of the film as there were too many jump cuts in the first half and slow pacing in the second half. But I was never disappointed with the music, it is still my go-to album whenever I am confused on what to listen to and I still enjoy the soundtrack in the same way as I did in 2011. The guideline from A R Rahman to Irshad Kamil (lyricist) was simple, “Do not write songs, write history” and I think Rockstar is an historic album which will stay forever.

Imtiyaz Ali is a visionary director and his films are ahead of their time. He recognized that this movie will not be understood by many during release but it will be discussed after a few years and that happened as both Rockstar and Tamasha have cult status with dedicated fans. These movies are in no sense perfect but there are some parts of it where people feel connected to. Rockstar was one of the biggest films of the year 2011 and was expected to do well but the film was a financial dud. The only good part that came from Rockstar was Ranbir’s performance and the music. Ranbir established himself as a true Rockstar of the film industry.

If we talk about heroes of the film, we generally recognize Ranbir, ARR, Imtiyaz, Mohit and Irshad Kamil but I think we miss out on appreciating two important technicians who painted the picture and edited the film. I think Anil Mehta (Cinematographer) and Aarti Bajaj (Editor) also deserve the same amount of recognition for the film. Rockstar is a complex film and the editing played a key role in it. Yes, I know I blamed editing earlier but I think it is one of the best things about this film and with some knowledge on editing, I can understand the efforts to edit a film like Rockstar. An example of brilliant editing in the film is the song Phir se ud chala, just in a few seconds the movie is transitioning Janardan to Jordan and the timeline has moved forward so much.

Rockstar is the work of art, a cinematic experience and the story is beyond the understanding of the relationships of this world. As I said, If you realize the quote, you get the film.

Let me know what is your experience about this film. Rockstar is available on Jio Cinema and Eros now.
